I've been trying this product out and was successful using it against Verizon DSL. However, I have not been able to get it going for OOL. The SMTP and POP3 accounts should both be mail.optonline.net and there should be no authentication.

When I try, here is the message I get.

Connecting to SMTP server
Connected to SMTP server
220 mta4.srv.hcvlny.cv.net -- Server ESMTP (Sun Java System Messagin
g Server 6.2-8.04 (built Feb 28 2007))
250 mta4.srv.hcvlny.cv.net OK, ool-457d9008.dyn.optonline.net [69.125.144.8].
221 2.3.0 Bye received. Goodbye.

I don't know what the problem is. On top of that, when I try to get out of the demo excel session (smtp_vba.xls) it seems that something is not release and I can not edit VBA sessions anymore and am forced to shut down Excel. This behavior seems to exist if the smtp product is not successful delivering a message.

Anyone know why this could be happening? It's pretty strange that this works on the same computer with Verizon DSL but the OOL. Am I missing something?

It's difficult to say why it fails. I can't even connect to mail.optonline.net - they probably limit connections to IPs within their network

Could you elaborate on this a little further or direct me to a thread if this has already been covered? Are you saying if I'm logged in to OOL via a web mail tool I may not be able to create an additional connection?

One more interesting thing. I can connect to the web server via Microsoft Outlook which I thought was interesting. If you have any suggestions as to how the osmtp parameters line up with the outlook account parameters it would be much appreciated.

I'm saying you can connect to OOL SMTP server only when you are connected to Internet via OOL. I was able to connect to their POP3 server (port 110, for retrieving emails) without any problem. But any attempt to get to port 25 fails.

Could be one of the reasons:
- they have a different host for SMTP (not mail.optonline.net)
- they run SMTP service on non-standard port (not 25)
- they only allow to connect to SMTP from within their network (IP address pool)

Here is how Outlook account info corresponds to OSSMTP connection properties:
.Server = Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
.Port  = normally you shouldn't touch, but just in case check Advanced tab, to make sure it is set to 25
.Username = User name under Logon information
.Password = Password also from Logon information
.AuthenticationType = normally AuthLogin, but if you have "Log on using SPA" checked, you can stop right there/ SMTP Component does not support this type of authentication
